The Story

Remember Hudson's Bay (The Bay)?

From the Hudson's Bay Company's origins in 1670 to generations of Canadians shopping at The Bay, the retail banner became one of the country's most recognizable commercial names.

The Hudson's Bay Company was founded in 1670 and evolved over centuries from the fur trade into a major Canadian retail institution. Generations knew its department stores as The Bay and later Hudson's Bay. Following creditor protection and liquidation in 2025, the remaining Hudson's Bay department stores closed in June 2025. This archive entry focuses on the historic Canadian retail banner and the memories connected with it.
